About Musée Alsacien
An enchanting folk museum in three interconnected timbered houses recreating traditional Alsatian domestic interiors, costumes, toys and crafts across the centuries.
The Musée Alsacien, housed in three interconnected 17th-century timbered mansions on the Quai Saint-Nicolas beside the River Ill, is one of the finest folk museums in France, dedicated to the material culture of traditional Alsatian life. The museum was founded in 1902 by a group of artists and scholars determined to preserve the distinctly Alsatian way of life threatened by assimilation following German annexation in 1871. The collection covers every aspect of rural and urban Alsatian life from the 17th to the early 20th century: completely furnished traditional rooms (kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms, and wine cellars), festival costumes from across the region's diverse communities, religious folk art and devotional objects, toys and games, agricultural tools, faïence, glass, and furniture. The arrangement of the museum through the rambling interconnected rooms of three historic buildings is itself an architectural pleasure, with unexpected stairways, courtyard views, and the sense of exploring a genuine historic home rather than a conventional museum display.
Did you know? The museum was founded in 1902 specifically to preserve Alsatian cultural identity threatened by German annexation, its creation was an act of cultural resistance.
