About Neustadt (German Quarter)

Strasbourg's 19th-century German extension, built 1871–1918 in Wilhelmian grandeur, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a striking demonstration of imperial urban planning.

After France's defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, Strasbourg was incorporated into the German Empire and became the capital of the new imperial territory of Reichsland Elsass-Lothringen. The Germans immediately set about building a new city quarter worthy of imperial ambitions: the Neustadt (New Town), planned by architect Jean-Geoffroy Conrath and completed between 1871 and 1918. The Neustadt is one of the most coherent and ambitious examples of late 19th-century urban planning in Europe, covering about 250 hectares north and east of the medieval core. Its boulevards, squares, and parks are lined with monumental buildings in the Historicist and Jugendstil (German Art Nouveau) styles: the Imperial Palace (Kaiserpalast), the University of Strasbourg, the National Library, the Protestant Church of Saint Paul, and the great Place de la République at its centre. The ensemble was added to the existing UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017. Its grandeur and coherence are remarkable, a city within a city, built in forty-seven years.

Did you know? The Neustadt was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2017, meaning Strasbourg has two UNESCO-listed historic districts, the medieval Grand Île and the 19th-century German Neustadt.
