About Mount Igueldo

The wooded hill anchoring the western end of La Concha bay, reached by a 1912 funicular, it offers the most famous panoramic view of San Sebastián and its perfect bay, with a vintage amusement park on top that has operated since 1912.

Monte Igueldo anchors the western end of La Concha bay, providing the mirror image to Monte Urgull on the east. The hill is reached by a funicular railway that has operated since 1912, and at the top is a vintage amusement park, also dating from 1912, that has become one of the nostalgic icons of San Sebastián, with its antique rides, roller coasters, and views over the bay. But the most important attraction of Monte Igueldo is the view: from the terrace at the top, the full sweep of La Concha bay is visible in its entirety, the perfect crescent of white sand, the Isla Santa Clara, the Old Town beneath Monte Urgull, and the city spreading behind. This is the view that has appeared in a thousand photographs of San Sebastián, and it is as beautiful as the photographs suggest. On clear days, the view extends east along the Basque coast towards the French border, and west towards the Galician coast. The hill is also the starting point of coastal walks towards Zarautz and Getaria.

Did you know? The Monte Igueldo funicular (1912) is one of the oldest functioning funiculars in Spain. The roughly 312-metre-long track rises at gradients reaching nearly 58%, carrying passengers in two counterbalancing cars to the summit in about 3 minutes. The funicular operates year-round and is essential for non-hikers visiting the summit.
