About San Telmo Museoa (Basque Museum)
The Basque Country's premier museum of history and culture, housed in a spectacular 16th-century Dominican convent and a modern extension, it contains El Greco paintings, Basque prehistoric finds, folk culture exhibits, and tells the complete story of Basque identity.
San Telmo Museoa, the Basque Museum and Museum of San Sebastián, occupies a 16th-century Dominican convent at the foot of Monte Urgull, with a major modern extension (by Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos, 2011) that doubles the exhibition space. The museum is the most comprehensive institution dedicated to Basque history, culture, and identity in existence. Its collections span the prehistoric (including important Basque prehistoric finds such as the Venus of Gagarino and Palaeolithic tools from the region's caves), the medieval, and the modern. The convent church contains extraordinary large-scale murals by the Catalan artist Josep Maria Sert (1929), depicting scenes from Basque history, culture, and legend in a dramatic, almost cinematic style. The museum also holds important paintings by El Greco (most notably a large painting of Saint Jerome) and other European masters. The modern sections of the museum are dedicated to the social history of the Basque Country, its industrial development, the emergence of Basque nationalism, the impact of the Civil War and ETA conflict, and the contemporary Basque cultural renaissance.
Did you know? The Basque language, Euskera, is a language isolate, it has no known relationship to any other language in the world, living or extinct. The leading theory is that it is a surviving remnant of the pre-Indo-European languages of Europe, spoken before the arrival of Indo-European peoples around 4,000-5,000 years ago.
