About Cathedral of Málaga
The great unfinished Renaissance-Baroque cathedral known as La Manquita (the One-Armed Lady), one of the most imposing religious buildings in Andalusia, whose missing south tower and famous completed tower are the defining silhouette of Málaga's skyline.
The Cathedral of Málaga is one of the most architecturally fascinating churches in Spain, a massive Renaissance building begun in 1528 on the site of the main mosque, whose construction stretched over nearly two centuries and was never completed. The most famous characteristic is the missing south tower: the north tower was completed to its full height of 84 metres in the Baroque period, but the south tower was abandoned at a fraction of its intended height, giving the cathedral its asymmetrical silhouette and its nickname 'La Manquita' (the One-Armed Lady). The interior is exceptional: a double-aisled nave with extraordinary choir stalls carved by Pedro de Mena and Pedro Duque Cornejo.
Did you know? Pedro de Mena (1628-1688), who carved the choir stalls of Málaga Cathedral, is one of the supreme masters of Spanish Baroque wood sculpture. His figures are extraordinary for their psychological intensity: the carved faces of the 40 saints in the choir stalls show a range of emotional states, ecstasy, grief, determination, resignation, that is unique in 17th-century sculpture.
