About Alcazaba de Málaga
The finest Moorish fortress in Andalusia after the Alhambra, an 11th-century palatial citadel rising above the city on a rocky promontory, with double walls, towers, and a palace interior of horseshoe arches, marble fountains, and garden courtyards.
The Alcazaba de Málaga is an 11th-century Moorish palace-fortress built by Badis ben Habus, the Zirid king of the Taifa of Granada, and later used by the Nasrid emirs of Granada. It rises on the rocky hill above the Roman theatre and the historic centre, connected to the Castillo de Gibralfaro above by a long double-walled rampart. The complex consists of a lower military precinct and an upper palatial area with gardens, fountains, horseshoe-arched doorways, and residential apartments. The views from the towers over the port, the city, and the Mediterranean are exceptional. The archaeological museum housed within the palace contains an important collection of Moorish ceramics and artefacts.
Did you know? The Alcazaba de Málaga contains an important archaeological museum specialising in Moorish Málaga, including an extensive collection of Nasrid-period ceramics, the distinctive glazed pottery produced in the Granada Emirate in the 14th and 15th centuries. Some of the finest examples were discovered during excavations in Málaga's historic centre and are now housed in the palace rooms.
