About Castillo de Gibralfaro
The 14th-century Moorish castle crowning the hill above Málaga, connected to the Alcazaba below by a long double-walled rampart, offering the finest panoramic views in the city over the port, the bullring, the historic centre, and the Mediterranean.
The Castillo de Gibralfaro is a 14th-century Moorish castle built by Yusuf I of Granada on the summit of the rocky hill above Málaga, on the site of a Phoenician lighthouse (the name comes from the Arabic Jabal-Faro, 'Lighthouse Hill'). The castle is connected to the Alcazaba below by a long double-walled rampart. It was the site of a famous siege in 1487 when the Catholic Monarchs besieged the Moorish garrison for three months before it finally surrendered. The castle ramparts provide a complete circuit walk with extraordinary views over the city, harbour, bullring, and Mediterranean. A small military museum is housed within the castle.
Did you know? The Castillo de Gibralfaro takes its name from a Phoenician lighthouse that stood on this site before the Arabs built their castle. The Phoenicians established a trading post at Málaga around 770 BC and built the lighthouse to guide ships into the harbour. The Arabic name Jabal-Faro (Lighthouse Hill) preserved the memory of the Phoenician structure for more than two millennia after it had disappeared.
