About Puerta de Alcalá

An iconic 18th-century neoclassical triumphal arch with five arches at the entrance to Madrid, one of the five original gates of the old city wall and now the symbol of the Spanish capital.

The Puerta de Alcalá is one of Madrid's most iconic landmarks and one of the most recognisable symbols of the Spanish capital, a majestic neoclassical triumphal arch that stands at the entrance to the Retiro Park, marking what was once the eastern gate of the city. The arch was commissioned by King Charles III and designed by the architect Francesco Sabatini, an Italian working in Madrid in the neoclassical style. It was completed in 1778 and replaced an earlier, smaller gate that had stood on the same site. The arch has five openings, three central arched passages and two rectangular side passages, and is constructed in grey Colmenar limestone quarried from outside Madrid. The central attic bears the royal coat of arms of Charles III. The structure stands 19.5 metres high and is considered one of the finest examples of 18th-century neoclassical architecture in Spain. The Puerta de Alcalá features in countless photographs, postcards, and representations of Madrid, and has become shorthand for the city itself, appearing on bus tokens, in song titles, and in the national consciousness as the symbol of Madrid.

Did you know? The Puerta de Alcalá was built to replace an earlier smaller gate that stood on the same site, Charles III wanted something worthy of a European capital when he arrived from Naples in 1759.
