About Cibeles Palace (Palacio de Comunicaciones)
Madrid's magnificent 1919 neo-Plateresque former post office, nicknamed the "cathedral of communications," now serving as Madrid City Hall with a spectacular rooftop viewpoint.
The Palacio de Comunicaciones, now officially the Palacio de Cibeles, is one of the most spectacular buildings in Madrid, an extraordinary confection of neo-Baroque, neo-Plateresque, and modernist detail that faces the Cibeles fountain and dominates the most important intersection in central Madrid. Designed by Antonio Palacios and Joaquín Otamendi and completed in 1919, it was built as the central post office for Spain, a commission so prestigious that it prompted one of the most lavish architectural solutions of the early 20th century. The building's white granite towers, pinnacles, and elaborately carved facades drew immediate comparisons to Gothic cathedrals, earning it the affectionate nickname "Our Lady of the Post." The interior, with its vast glass-roofed central hall, is magnificent. The building was converted into Madrid City Hall in 2011. The rooftop terrace, accessible by lift, offers what many consider the finest free panoramic view of central Madrid, taking in the Prado, the Retiro, the Royal Palace, and Gran Vía from a height of approximately 70 metres. Real Madrid players appear on this building's balcony to celebrate their championship victories, which are celebrated at the Cibeles fountain directly below.
Did you know? The building is nicknamed "Our Lady of the Communications" (Nuestra Señora de las Comunicaciones) by Madrileños because its Gothic towers and pinnacles resemble a cathedral.
