About Royal Botanical Garden

An 18th-century royal scientific garden adjacent to the Prado with 5,000 plant species, ornamental fountains, and a peaceful green oasis in the heart of central Madrid.

The Real Jardín Botánico de Madrid, established in its current location by King Charles III in 1781, is both a working scientific research institution and one of the most beautiful and peaceful green spaces in central Madrid. Adjacent to the Prado Museum along the Paseo del Prado, the garden occupies 8 hectares on a gently sloping terraced site and contains approximately 5,000 plant species from around the world, including over 100 endangered species. The garden is organized into three main terraces: the lower Terrace of Schools, where medicinal and useful plants are organized by family; the middle Terrace of Plants, with ornamental herbaceous plants and aquatic specimens; and the upper Terrace of the Greenhouse, with the spectacular 19th-century Villanueva Pavilion and the tropical greenhouse. The garden was established by Charles III, the same Bourbon monarch who commissioned the Prado building and beautified the Paseo del Prado, as part of his programme to bring the Enlightenment to Spain through the systematic study of the natural world. It contains specimens collected during the great 18th-century Spanish scientific expeditions to Latin America, the Philippines, and across the world.

Did you know? The Botanical Garden's collection includes living descendants of plants collected during the great 18th-century Spanish scientific expeditions to Colombia, Peru, and the Philippines.
