About Templo de Debod
A genuine ancient Egyptian temple from the 2nd century BC, gifted to Spain by Egypt in 1968 and reassembled in a Madrid park, offering remarkable sunset views over the Casa de Campo.
The Templo de Debod is one of the most extraordinary historical objects in Madrid, and indeed one of the most unexpected: a genuine ancient Egyptian temple from the 2nd century BC, standing in a park in the centre of the Spanish capital. The temple was originally located near Aswan in Egypt and was dedicated to the god Amun. When the construction of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960s threatened to submerge the temple under the waters of Lake Nasser, UNESCO organized an international rescue operation for the monuments of Nubia. In gratitude for Spain's assistance in relocating the great temples of Abu Simbel, the Egyptian government donated the Templo de Debod to Spain in 1968. It was dismantled, transported to Madrid, and carefully reassembled in its current location in the Parque del Oeste, a small hill just west of the Royal Palace, where it was inaugurated in 1972. The temple sits in a small reflecting pool and its interior, which can be visited on guided tours, contains the original decorated stone chambers. But the temple is perhaps most beloved for its extraordinary location: facing west from its hilltop position, it offers what many consider the finest sunset viewpoint in Madrid, with the sun setting over the Casa de Campo and the mountains beyond.
Did you know? The Templo de Debod was built in Egypt in the 2nd century BC and was dedicated to the god Amun, it predates the Roman Empire, and the decorations inside include hieroglyphs carved more than 2,000 years ago.
