About Carrera del Darro
The most picturesque street in Granada, a riverside promenade running along the Darro River between the city centre and the Albaicín, with the Alhambra rising on the hill directly above.
The Carrera del Darro is the short stretch of road running alongside the Darro River at the base of the Albaicín and Alhambra hills, considered the most picturesque street in Granada. The road follows the course of the river through a narrow gorge between the two hills, with the Albaicín's whitewashed houses rising steeply to the left and the red walls of the Alhambra visible above to the right. Along its length, the street passes several significant monuments: the Bañuelo, a remarkably well-preserved 11th-century Moorish bathhouse; the Casa de Castril, a Renaissance palace now housing the Archaeological Museum; and the church of Santa Ana, which marks the point where the Darro disappears underground. The street is one of the finest short walks in Granada and is best appreciated on foot in the early morning before the tourist crowds arrive.
