About Alcaicería

The ancient silk market of Moorish Granada, a labyrinth of tiny shops selling ceramics, textiles, and crafts, rebuilt in the 19th century on the footprint of the original Nasrid bazaar destroyed by fire in 1843.

The Alcaicería was the royal silk market of Islamic Granada, a covered bazaar of some 200 shops in which only silk could be sold, operating under direct royal licence and supervision. The original Nasrid Alcaicería was one of the most important commercial spaces in medieval Spain, central to the silk industry that was the main source of Granada's wealth. The building was destroyed by fire in 1843 and rebuilt in the Moorish Revival style shortly afterwards, creating the maze of small arched lanes and tiny shops that exists today. Though a 19th-century reconstruction rather than a genuine medieval building, the Alcaicería retains its traditional function as a craft and souvenir market selling the ceramics, woven goods, leather, and decorative items characteristic of Granada.

Did you know? The Nasrid kingdom's primary export and main source of government revenue was silk, Granada silk was traded as far as China and India, and the city's position as the last Islamic kingdom in Iberia was partly sustained by the economic power of the silk trade.
