About Alcazaba
The oldest part of the Alhambra, a 9th-century military citadel whose towers offer the finest panoramic views over Granada, the surrounding plain, and the snow-capped Sierra Nevada beyond.
The Alcazaba is the oldest section of the Alhambra complex, a military fortress built in the 9th century on the western tip of the Alhambra hill that predates the Nasrid palaces by several centuries. The fortress consists of a series of towers and battlements connected by interior walls, with the Torre de la Vela, the Watchtower, rising above everything as the highest point of the Alhambra. The towers offer extraordinary panoramic views in all directions: east towards the Nasrid Palaces and Generalife, south towards the city and the Vega (the fertile plain of Granada), north towards the Albaicín and Sacromonte, and west towards the distant Sierra Nevada. On 2 January each year, the bells of the Torre de la Vela are rung to commemorate the Christian reconquest of Granada, and young women ring them in the hope of finding a husband within the year.
Did you know? The Torre de la Vela's bell, which regulated irrigation across the Vega, was rung on a strict schedule that varied by season, day of the week, and weather conditions, the person responsible for ringing it held one of the most important practical offices in the Nasrid administration.
