About Neretina & Salento Wine

The exceptional wines of the western Salento, Negroamaro and Primitivo from some of the oldest vines in Italy, produced in the area around Gallipoli and Alezio, with a depth of flavour unique to the Ionian coast.

The wine-producing area around Gallipoli and the western Salento is one of the most distinctive in Italy. The principal grape variety is Negroamaro, 'bitter black', a native Salentine variety of great antiquity that produces full-bodied, deeply coloured red wines with a characteristic bitterness and warmth that reflects the extreme growing conditions of the southern Ionian coast. The DOC Alezio, centred on the town of Alezio a few kilometres north of Gallipoli, is one of the most important appellations for Negroamaro production. Primitivo is also grown in the area, producing wines of considerable power. The local rosato (rosé) wines made from Negroamaro, particularly the Rosato di Salento, are among the finest rosés produced in Italy.

Did you know? Negroamaro is believed to have been brought to the Salento by Greek colonists approximately 2,500 years ago, making it one of the oldest grape varieties in continuous cultivation in Italy, and one of the few varieties that can trace its introduction to a specific historical event (Greek colonisation).
