About Bastion Walls Circuit
Walking the perimeter of Gallipoli's island city along the 16th-century artillery bastions, a complete circuit of sea walls with the Ionian Sea on one side and the baroque old town on the other.
The bastion walls of Gallipoli enclose the entire island old town in a virtually complete circuit of late medieval and early modern defensive architecture, a sequence of massive artillery platforms, sea gates, and watchtowers that runs around the perimeter of the island for approximately 2 kilometres. The walk along the top of the walls, where a path is maintained, is one of the finest elevated promenades in southern Italy, on one side, the open Ionian Sea; on the other, the baroque roofscape of the old town, with the cathedral dome, the church towers, and the baroque palace facades all visible at close quarters. The views from the bastion towers extend over the sea in every direction.
