About Ponte Vecchio

Florence's iconic medieval bridge, lined with goldsmiths' shops on both sides since 1593, with the Vasari Corridor running secretly above, and the only bridge the retreating Germans did not destroy in 1944.

The Ponte Vecchio, 'Old Bridge', has spanned the narrowest point of the Arno since antiquity, though the current structure dates from 1345, rebuilt after a devastating flood. Medieval bridges typically housed mixed trades; in 1593 Grand Duke Ferdinando I expelled the butchers and tanners whose waste was polluting the river and replaced them with goldsmiths and jewellers, who remain to this day.

The Vasari Corridor, commissioned by Cosimo I in 1565 and designed by Vasari in just five months, runs along the eastern side of the bridge, connecting the Palazzo Vecchio to the Pitti Palace, a private elevated walkway that allowed the Medici to travel without mixing with the public. During the German retreat in August 1944, all Florence's other bridges were destroyed on Hitler's orders. The Ponte Vecchio survived, reportedly at Hitler's personal request, though alternative accounts exist.

Did you know? Grand Duke Ferdinando I expelled butchers from the Ponte Vecchio in 1593 because their meat waste was polluting the Arno, he replaced them with goldsmiths, who have been there ever since.
