About Boboli Gardens
Florence's great 16th-century Renaissance garden rising behind the Pitti Palace, with ancient grottos, fountains, an amphitheatre, and sweeping views over the city.
The Boboli Gardens cover 45,000 square metres on the hillside behind the Pitti Palace. They were first laid out after Eleanor of Toledo purchased the palace in 1549, with initial designs by Niccolò Tribolo, and were expanded over subsequent centuries by the Medici and Habsburg-Lorraine dynasties.
The gardens are a masterwork of Italian formal garden design: geometric parterres, cypress-lined avenues, stone grottos decorated with stalactites and shells, an amphitheatre cut from the hillside, a long central axis leading up to the Forte Belvedere, and numerous fountains and statues. The Grotto of Buontalenti contains original statues by Michelangelo and casts of his Captives; the Neptune's Pool reflects the sky at the garden's upper level. Giambologna's Oceanus Fountain, originally in the garden, is now in the Bargello; a cast stands in its original position.
Did you know? The Boboli amphitheatre was used for the earliest Medici court entertainments that helped inspire the invention of opera in late 16th-century Florence.
