About Piazza della Signoria

Florence's main civic square and an open-air sculpture museum, featuring Cellini's bronze Perseus, the Neptune Fountain, a marble copy of Michelangelo's David, and the Loggia dei Lanzi.

The Piazza della Signoria has been the political heart of Florence for seven centuries. The irregular L-shaped square is dominated by the fortress-like Palazzo Vecchio at one end and the elegant open arcade of the Loggia dei Lanzi at the other, a sheltered outdoor gallery that has housed some of the most important sculpture in Florence since the 14th century.

A marble copy of Michelangelo's David stands at the entrance to the Palazzo Vecchio, where the original stood from 1504 to 1873. Baccio Bandinelli's Hercules and Cacus flanks it. In the square itself Bartolomeo Ammannati's Neptune Fountain (1563–1565) is a Florentine landmark, though Florentines are famously unimpressed with Neptune, they have a saying: 'What a beautiful marble you have ruined, Ammannati.' The Loggia dei Lanzi shelters Benvenuto Cellini's Perseus with the Head of Medusa (1554) and Giambologna's Rape of the Sabine Women (1583).

Did you know? The paving stones of the Piazza della Signoria contain a small plaque marking the exact spot where the monk Savonarola was burned at the stake in 1498, after presiding over his famous Bonfires of the Vanities in the same square.
