About Sanctuary of San Luca

A Baroque basilica perched on a hilltop above Bologna, home to a venerated Byzantine icon of the Madonna, connected to the city by the world's longest portico.

The Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca stands on the Colle della Guardia hill at 289 metres above sea level, commanding a panoramic view of Bologna and the surrounding plain. The current Baroque church was designed by Carlo Francesco Dotti and built between 1723 and 1757. The sanctuary's greatest treasure is a Byzantine-style icon of the Madonna and Child, traditionally attributed to Saint Luke and believed to have been brought from Constantinople in the 12th century. The icon is richly adorned with votive offerings and is displayed in a jewelled setting at the high altar. The sanctuary is one of the most important Marian shrines in Italy. Each year, on the Saturday before the Ascension, the icon is carried in solemn procession through the 666-arch portico down to Bologna's cathedral and back. The hilltop setting offers magnificent views over Bologna, the Po Valley plain, and the Apennine ridgeline.

Did you know? The Madonna icon has been carried in procession down to Bologna's cathedral every year without interruption since at least the 12th century.
