MAMbo, the Museum of Modern Art Bologna, is housed in a converted industrial building, the former Forno del Pane (Municipal Bread Oven) from 1915. The museum is dedicated to Italian and international art from the 20th century to the present, with particular strength in the Arte Povera movement and works by leading Italian artists of the post-war decades. Its greatest draw is the Morandi Room: a permanent display of the world's most comprehensive collection of works by Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964), the great Bolognese painter who spent his entire life in Bologna and is buried at the Certosa cemetery. Morandi painted almost exclusively bottles, jugs, boxes, and bowls, the same humble objects, over and over, for five decades. Yet through the intensity of his observation and the extraordinary subtlety of his colour sense, he transformed these mundane objects into meditations of haunting beauty. Morandi is now recognised as one of the most important painters of the 20th century.
