About Portico di San Luca
The longest portico in the world: 3.8 km and 666 consecutive arches rising up the hillside from Bologna's city gate to the hilltop Sanctuary of San Luca.
The Portico di San Luca is one of the great architectural and spiritual achievements of Bologna, a single continuous covered walkway of 666 arches stretching 3.8 kilometres up the hill of Colle della Guardia from the Arco del Meloncello city gate to the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca. Construction began in 1674 and the structure was completed in 1793. The portico was built to protect a sacred image of the Madonna, an icon believed to have been painted by Saint Luke, as it was carried in annual procession down from the hillside sanctuary into the city. Each arch was sponsored by a different Bolognese family, guild, or confraternity. Walking the portico, uphill on the right side, downhill on the left, takes about an hour, and the walk passes through a series of chapels built into the arcade structure. The sanctuary at the top offers panoramic views of Bologna, the Po Valley, and the Apennine mountains, and on clear winter days even the distant Alps.
Did you know? The 666 arches are not diabolical, each set corresponds to a mystery of the rosary, making the full walk a complete rosary pilgrimage by the time you reach the top.
