About Torre Glòries (Torre Agbar)

Jean Nouvel's spectacular bullet-shaped skyscraper, 38 floors of concrete and glass covered in 4,500 LED panels that create dazzling light displays at night, one of the most distinctive and debated buildings of early 21st-century Barcelona, at the edge of the 22@ technology district.

The Torre Glòries, originally called the Torre Agbar, after the water company Agbar that commissioned it, is one of the most striking buildings in Barcelona and one of the most recognizable works of French architect Jean Nouvel, who designed it and who also designed the Musée du quai Branly in Paris and the Institut du Monde Arabe. The building opened in 2005 and immediately became a landmark of the Barcelona skyline, a 38-floor, 145-metre-tall bullet-shaped tower covered in aluminium cladding and 56,619 glass panels in 25 different colours that create a shimmering, iridescent surface in daylight. At night, 4,500 LED panels embedded in the facade create programmable light displays that can be seen from across the city. The building stands at the junction of the Avinguda Diagonal and the Carrer Badajoz, at the northern end of the Eixample and the entrance to the Poblenou-based 22@ innovation district, where old industrial buildings have been converted into the offices of technology companies and startups. The building is now operated as a luxury hotel and event space. Its presence at the edge of the 22@ district is symbolic: it announces Barcelona's ambitions as a technology and innovation city.

Did you know? The Torre Glòries's surface is covered with 56,619 glass panels in 25 different colours, the colours were chosen by Jean Nouvel to evoke the colours of the Mediterranean landscape, from the blues of the sea to the ochres of the soil and the greens of the vegetation.
