About Columbus Monument & Port Vell
The 60-metre iron column topped by a statue of Christopher Columbus pointing toward the sea, erected for the 1888 Universal Exposition, marks the end of Las Ramblas and the beginning of the Barcelona waterfront, overlooking the old harbour (Port Vell) and the Barceloneta.
The Monument a Colom (Columbus Monument) stands at the end of Las Ramblas, where the famous boulevard meets the sea, marking the entry to the city's historic port (Port Vell, the Old Port). The monument was built for the 1888 Universal Exposition and commemorates Columbus's return to Barcelona in April 1493 after his first voyage to the Americas, when he was received by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella at the Royal Palace on the Plaça del Rei. The column is 60 metres tall, cast in iron, and designed by Gaietà Buigas. The statue of Columbus at the summit points outward, though, famously, not toward the Americas but toward the Mediterranean, in the general direction of home. A small elevator inside the column allows visitors to reach the viewing platform just below the statue. The Port Vell (Old Port) behind the monument was transformed in the 1990s into a leisure waterfront with the Maremagnum shopping and entertainment complex, the IMAX cinema, and the L'Aquàrium de Barcelona. The Columbus Monument and the Port Vell together mark the transition between the historic city and the waterfront, the place where Barcelona opens to the sea.
Did you know? The Columbus statue at the top of the monument is famously pointing in the wrong direction, not toward the Americas (which would be roughly west-northwest) but toward the Mediterranean, in the general direction of North Africa or even Italy, depending on your interpretation.
