About Arc de Triomf
Barcelona's grand neomudéjar triumphal arch, built as the main entrance to the 1888 Universal Exposition, a broad pedestrian promenade lined with palm trees leads from the arch to the Parc de la Ciutadella.
The Arc de Triomf was built in 1888 as the main gateway to Barcelona's Universal Exposition, the event that announced the city's arrival as a modern European metropolis. Designed by the Catalan architect Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas in a distinctive neomudéjar style, drawing on Moorish architectural traditions with its warm terracotta brick, geometric ornamentation, and pointed arches, the arch was, unusually for a triumphal arch, conceived from the beginning as a celebratory civic gateway rather than a memorial to military victories. The frieze on the main face shows a group of nations arriving in Barcelona, symbolizing the Exposition's international character. The arch stands 30 metres tall and is constructed of brick with ceramic tile decoration. It marks the northern entrance to the Passeig de Lluís Companys, a broad, gracious promenade lined with palm trees and wrought-iron lamp posts, which leads south to the Parc de la Ciutadella. The Arc de Triomf and the Passeig de Lluís Companys form one of the most pleasant urban promenades in the city, connecting the Eixample to the park.
Did you know? Unlike most triumphal arches around the world, which were built to commemorate military victories, the Arc de Triomf was built purely as a ceremonial civic gateway for the 1888 Universal Exposition, celebrating commerce, culture, and international exchange.
