The Santuario della Madonna di Lourdes sits on the San Pietro hillside above the Roman theatre, accessible via a small funicular from the Teatro Romano area or by a steep path through the hillside gardens. The sanctuary was created in the late nineteenth century as a local replica of the famous Lourdes grotto in France, with a cave shrine and a small chapel. Its great attraction is its position: at the top of the funicular ride is a broad terrace with one of the most spectacular panoramic views in the entire Veneto, looking out over the whole of Verona laid below in a terracotta sea, the Adige glinting through it, and on clear days the snowy Alps visible from west to east across the entire northern horizon.
