About Lamberti Tower

Verona's tallest medieval tower at 84 metres, rising from the Palazzo della Ragione beside Piazza delle Erbe, with an elevator to the top for the best panoramic views in the city.

The Torre dei Lamberti is the tallest tower in Verona, rising 84 metres above the Piazza delle Erbe from the Palazzo della Ragione complex. It was begun in 1172 by the Lamberti family, one of Verona's most powerful medieval merchant dynasties, and completed in the 15th century with the addition of the octagonal belfry. The tower houses two historic bells: the Rengo bell which once called citizens to civic assemblies, and the Marangona which tolled for fires and floods. An elevator now carries visitors from the court of the Palazzo della Ragione to the top, from which a 360-degree panorama reveals the entire historic centre of Verona, the Arena, the river, the hills, and on clear days the Alps. The tower's position at the heart of the civic complex makes it the ideal orientation point for understanding the layout of medieval Verona.

Did you know? The tower's two historic bells, the Rengo (civic assembly) and the Marangona (fire alarm), were in active civic use for centuries; the Marangona's irregular urgent tolling would send Veronese citizens running into the streets.
