About Ponte dell'Accademia

The Ponte dell'Accademia is a wooden bridge spanning the Grand Canal at its narrowest southern crossing, offering one of the most famous views in Venice, looking back east toward the white dome of Santa Maria della Salute framed between the canal's palaces.

The Ponte dell'Accademia is one of four bridges crossing the Grand Canal (the others being the Rialto, the Scalzi, and the Calatrava Constitution Bridge). It stands at the point where the Grand Canal makes its final bend before opening into the San Marco basin, and connects the sestiere of San Marco on the east to Dorsoduro on the west.

The current wooden structure was built as a temporary bridge in 1933 and was intended to be replaced by a permanent iron structure, but the temporary bridge proved so charming and so well-loved by Venetians that it has remained ever since, rebuilt in 1985 in a similar wooden style.

The Accademia Bridge is famous above all for the view from its summit: looking southeast from the middle of the bridge, you see the Grand Canal opening before you toward the white dome of Santa Maria della Salute and, beyond it, the open water of the lagoon. This view, the canal curving toward the baroque church, framed between the facades of palaces on either side, is one of the most photographed in Venice and one of the great urban views of Europe.

Did you know? The Ponte dell'Accademia was built as a temporary wooden bridge in 1933 and was supposed to be replaced by a permanent iron structure. When Venetians protested against the iron design, the authorities abandoned the plan and kept the wooden bridge, which has now been 'temporary' for over 90 years.
