The Palazzetto Bru Zane is a charming early 18th-century casino in the San Polo sestiere, now the Centre for French Romantic Music, hosting intimate chamber concerts and performing a unique role in rediscovering forgotten 19th-century French opera and orchestral works.
The Palazzetto Bru Zane is a small jewel of a building, an early 18th-century casino (meaning a small pleasure house, not a gambling establishment) built for the Zane family in the San Polo sestiere of Venice. The exterior is decorated with elaborate fresco decorations, and the interior retains much of its original painted decoration.
In the 21st century, the building was purchased by the Bru Zane Foundation, a French private foundation dedicated to the promotion of French Romantic music of the 19th century. The foundation restored the building and transformed it into a centre for concerts and musicological research focused specifically on French music from the period 1780-1920.
The Palazzetto hosts an annual concert season of chamber music and song, and regularly premieres recordings and performances of neglected or forgotten 19th-century French works, operas, symphonies, chamber music, many of which had not been heard since their original premieres. The concerts are intimate and the venue itself is exceptionally beautiful, making it one of the most distinctive musical experiences in Venice.
