About Palazzo Bellomo Regional Gallery
A magnificent Catalan-Gothic palace on Ortigia housing a regional art gallery whose centrepiece is Antonello da Messina's Annunciation, one of the most moving Renaissance paintings in Sicily.
Palazzo Bellomo is one of the finest medieval palaces on Ortigia, built in the 13th century by the Bellomo family and later expanded in the 14th and 15th centuries in the Catalan-Gothic style that was fashionable under Aragonese rule. The palace features a beautiful courtyard with an external staircase and arched loggia, and its rooms now house the Regional Gallery of Palazzo Bellomo. The undisputed masterpiece of the collection is Antonello da Messina's 'Annunciation' (c. 1474), a small, extraordinarily tender painting of the Virgin Mary receiving the news from the Angel Gabriel, in which Messina's mastery of the Flemish oil technique creates a quality of light unlike any other Italian painting of the period. The museum also contains Byzantine icons, medieval silver, and carriages.
Did you know? Antonello da Messina introduced Flemish oil painting techniques to Italy, having apparently learned them from Flemish painters or their work. His technique of building up luminous layers of translucent glaze was far in advance of contemporary Italian fresco-based methods and influenced Leonardo da Vinci and Giovanni Bellini.
