About Castello Maniace
A formidable 13th-century Hohenstaufen fortress at the very tip of Ortigia, built by Emperor Frederick II around 1239, commanding panoramic views of the two harbours and the open Mediterranean.
Castello Maniace stands at the very southern tip of Ortigia, where the island narrows to a rocky promontory jutting into the sea between the two great harbours. It was built by the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II, the Stupor Mundi, Wonder of the World, around 1239, as part of his ambitious programme of fortification throughout the Kingdom of Sicily. The castle is square in plan with four circular corner towers, built of golden limestone in the crisp, powerful style characteristic of Hohenstaufen military architecture. It was named for the Byzantine general Georgios Maniakes who had briefly reconquered Sicily for Constantinople in the 11th century. The castle served as a royal residence, a treasury, and later as a prison; its sea-facing terraces offer some of the finest views in Syracuse.
Did you know? When the Spanish controlled Syracuse in the 16th and 17th centuries, they mounted enormous bronze rams from ancient Carthaginian warships (captured in Sicily) at the entrance to Castello Maniace. These rams are now in the Museo Nazionale Romano in Rome, taken there after Italian unification.
