About Bodegas Ontañón

Bodegas Ontañón (founded 1985, Quel and Logroño) is one of Rioja Oriental's most distinctive producers, its Art Nouveau-inspired bodega in Logroño contains an extraordinary collection of sculptures, mosaics, and stained glass panels dedicated to the culture of wine, making it one of the most visually spectacular wineries in Spain.

Bodegas Ontañón was founded in 1985 by Marino Pérez Hierro in Quel, in the Rioja Oriental subzone (formerly Rioja Baja). The winery was established during a period when Rioja Oriental, warmer, drier, and producing wines with higher alcohol and more fruit than the traditional Rioja Alta, was gaining recognition for quality wines alongside its traditionally important bulk wine production. The Ontañón family subsequently built a spectacular second winery in Logroño (the capital of La Rioja) that doubles as an art museum, with an extensive collection of works by local and national artists focused on the theme of wine and viticulture. The winery produces a range of wines under the Ontañón, Vetiver, and Extravagante labels, including a highly regarded Ontañón Reserva and an experimental single-variety Graciano. The bodega also offers wine tourism experiences including guided tastings, food pairings, and the art museum walk.

Did you know? Logroño, the capital of La Rioja, is one of Spain's great tapas and wine bar cities, the Calle Laurel and Calle San Juan streets in the old town constitute one of the densest concentrations of pintxos and tapas bars in Spain outside of the Basque Country. The local tradition of the 'txikiteo' (bar-hopping from bar to bar, typically starting in the late evening, with a glass of wine or beer and a tapa at each stop) is enthusiastically practiced by locals and has made Logroño a significant culinary destination alongside its role as a wine capital.
