About Vivanco: Museum of Wine Culture
The Vivanco Museum of Wine Culture in Briones is one of the world's great wine museums, a permanent collection of some 4,000 objects on display tracing the history of wine from the earliest human civilizations to the present day, with exhibits of ancient amphorae, medieval presses, Roman mosaics, and an extraordinary collection of corkscrews.
The Vivanco Museum of Wine Culture was founded in 2004 by the Vivanco family, owners of the Vivanco winery in Briones, in the Rioja Alta, as a private cultural institution dedicated to the history and culture of wine. The museum contains a permanent collection of over 220,000 objects (of which approximately 4,000 are on display at any time), organized chronologically from the earliest Neolithic wine vessels to contemporary wine label design. Key highlights include a collection of ancient amphorae from Greece, Rome, and Phoenicia; medieval wine presses from Rioja and Navarre; a large collection of Roman mosaics depicting Bacchic scenes; an extraordinary collection of over 3,500 corkscrews from the 17th century to the present (probably the largest such collection in the world); a collection of Picasso ceramics with Bacchic themes; and a 'virtual vineyard' room demonstrating the annual cycle of vine growth and wine production. The winery also produces a range of wines from the surrounding Rioja Alta vineyards.
Did you know? The word 'corkscrew', and the cork-sealed bottle, only became widespread in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, when glassblowing technology improved to the point where bottles with consistent necks could be mass-produced. Before corks, wine was sealed with oil-soaked rags, wax, or wooden bungs. The first corkscrews were T-shaped screws similar to gun-barrel cleaning tools (the wire helix was called a 'worm' in both contexts); the first patent for a corkscrew was granted to Samuel Henshall in England in 1795.
