About Republic of San Marino

The world's oldest republic, founded in 301 AD by Saint Marinus on the summit of Monte Titano, just 25 kilometres from Rimini, a UNESCO World Heritage microstate surrounded entirely by Italy.

The Republic of San Marino claims to be the world's oldest surviving sovereign state and constitutional republic, founded on 3 September 301 AD by a Christian stonemason named Marinus, originally from the island of Rab (in modern Croatia), who established a small religious community on the summit of Monte Titano to escape religious persecution.

Mount Titano rises 755 metres from the flat Romagna plain, visible from Rimini on clear days, and its three distinctive peaks are each crowned by a medieval tower: Guaita (the oldest, 11th century), Cesta, and Montale. The historic centre and Monte Titano were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. San Marino is the world's fifth smallest country (61.2 km²) and has approximately 33,000 citizens. It maintained its independence through careful diplomacy for over seventeen centuries, surviving the Napoleonic conquests and both World Wars. The historic capital's medieval streets, city walls, and panoramic views over the Adriatic plain are impressive by any standard.

Did you know? San Marino is the world's oldest republic, founded in 301 AD, while the Western Roman Empire still stood, and nearly 1,500 years before the United States declared independence.
