About Domus del Chirurgo

An excavated Roman doctor's house from the 2nd–3rd century AD, displayed under a modern glass pavilion in the city centre, containing the largest collection of ancient surgical instruments ever found in one location.

The Domus del Chirurgo, House of the Surgeon, was discovered in 1989 during construction work beneath the Piazza Ferrari in the heart of Rimini. Archaeologists uncovered a Roman house dating to the second and third centuries AD, belonging to a doctor named Eutyches, whose identity is known from a bronze seal ring found on the site.

The most extraordinary find was a collection of over 150 surgical instruments, scalpels, forceps, specula, needles, probes, and specialised tools for eye surgery, representing the largest and most complete set of Roman medical instruments ever excavated from a single site. Their condition and variety reveal the sophistication of Roman medicine, which drew heavily on Greek tradition and produced surgeons of remarkable skill. The site is now displayed under a glass and steel pavilion that allows visitors to look directly down at the original excavations, giving an extraordinary sense of depth and layering in the urban fabric of ancient Rimini.

Did you know? The collection of over 150 surgical instruments found at the Domus del Chirurgo is the largest ancient medical instrument collection ever excavated from a single location in the world.
