About Palazzo della Pilotta

The Palazzo della Pilotta is the vast, deliberately incomplete Farnese ducal palace that dominates Parma's historic centre, a monument to ambition never fully realised, housing the Galleria Nazionale, the Teatro Farnese, and the Palatine Library in its massive brick walls.

The Palazzo della Pilotta is the single most imposing building in Parma, a massive, fortress-like brick structure that occupies an entire quarter of the historic city centre, built by the Farnese dukes from 1583 onward as their main ducal residence and administrative centre. The palace is deliberately incomplete: construction proceeded in fits and starts over nearly a century, and the exterior remains largely unfinished masonry without the stone cladding, sculptural decoration, and formal facades originally envisioned. Despite, or perhaps because of, this incompletion, the palace has a raw, overwhelming architectural presence. Its name comes from the Italian ball game pelota, which was played in one of its courtyards by the Farnese court. The palace complex today houses the Galleria Nazionale (with Leonardo, Correggio, and Parmigianino), the Teatro Farnese (the extraordinary 1628 wooden theatre), the Palatine Library, and the Museum of Antiquities. Heavily damaged by Allied bombing in 1944, much of the palace was carefully reconstructed in the following decades.

Did you know? The Palazzo della Pilotta's name comes from the Basque ball game pelota (Italian: pilotta) that was played in one of its internal courtyards by the Farnese ducal court in the late 16th century, making it one of the few major European palaces named after a sport.
