About Galleria Nazionale: National Gallery

The Galleria Nazionale inside Parma's Palazzo della Pilotta houses one of the finest art collections in northern Italy, including Leonardo da Vinci's mysterious La Scapigliata, major works by Correggio and Parmigianino, and a comprehensive collection documenting Parma's remarkable artistic heritage.

The Galleria Nazionale di Parma, housed in the vast Palazzo della Pilotta, is one of the principal art museums of northern Italy. Its collection reflects the exceptional artistic heritage of Parma, which was for much of the 16th and 17th centuries one of the most important centres of Italian painting. The most celebrated work in the collection is Leonardo da Vinci's La Scapigliata, a small, unfinished study of a woman's head in a state of serene introspection, probably executed around 1508, that is considered one of Leonardo's most beautiful and enigmatic works. Among the major works by Correggio are his Rest on the Flight into Egypt (with the famous Madonna of the Basket) and the large altarpiece of the Madonna of St Jerome. Parmigianino, the Parma-born mannerist painter, is represented by several major works including the Schiava Turca (Turkish Slave) and other portraits. The collection also includes works by Canaletto, Tiepolo, El Greco, Dosso Dossi, and Schedoni.

Did you know? The Galleria Nazionale di Parma owns Leonardo da Vinci's La Scapigliata, a small, unfinished panel of extraordinary beauty that is one of only about twenty paintings universally accepted as authentic works by Leonardo da Vinci.
