About Musée National du Moyen Âge: Cluny
France's greatest medieval museum, set atop visible Gallo-Roman thermal baths, home to the six extraordinary Lady and the Unicorn tapestries woven in the 15th century and now recognised as UNESCO heritage.
The Musée National du Moyen Âge occupies the medieval Hôtel de Cluny, itself built atop the superbly preserved Gallo-Roman baths of Lutetia (1st–3rd centuries AD), whose vaulted frigidarium still stands to full height. The museum holds France's finest collection of medieval art: illuminated manuscripts, Gothic sculptures including heads from Notre-Dame recovered from a demolished building in 1977, Romanesque capitals, goldsmithery, and stained glass. Its crown jewel is the six-piece Lady and the Unicorn tapestry cycle (Flanders, c.1500), depicting the five senses plus a mysterious sixth panel, "À mon seul désir", in tapestries of extraordinary refinement and symbolic depth. Reopened in 2022 after extensive renovation, the museum also offers direct access to the Gallo-Roman baths below street level.
Did you know? The six Lady and the Unicorn tapestries disappeared for centuries after their creation around 1500, and were only rediscovered in 1841 by the writer Prosper Mérimée in the château de Boussac in central France, where they had been used as horse blankets.
