About Château de Fontainebleau
The largest royal château in France, located 60km south of Paris, with over 1,500 rooms spanning eight centuries of royal history, the site of Napoleon's emotional farewell to his Imperial Guard in 1814.
The Château de Fontainebleau is the largest of the French royal châteaux and the one with the longest uninterrupted royal residence, every French monarch from Louis VII in the 12th century to Napoleon III in the 19th stayed here. Set in the vast Fontainebleau Forest 60 kilometres south of Paris, the château was dramatically expanded by Francis I beginning in 1528, who imported Italian Renaissance craftsmen, including Rosso Fiorentino and Primaticcio, to create the Fontainebleau School of art and decorative painting that influenced European aesthetics for generations. The château has over 1,500 rooms across multiple wings and courtyards. Napoleon held his Imperial court here and in April 1814 bade farewell to his Old Guard in the Cour des Adieux before leaving for exile on Elba, one of history's most dramatic public farewells.
Did you know? Every French monarch from Louis VII (12th century) to Napoleon III (19th century) stayed at Fontainebleau, making it the only royal residence with an unbroken record of royal habitation across eight centuries.
