About Port Hercule
Port Hercule is Monaco's historic main harbour, the only deep-water port on the Monaco coast, sheltered by a curved breakwater, and home to the principality's superyacht culture, the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix harbour section, and the Stade Nautique de Monaco.
Port Hercule, named after the ancient Ligurian and Greek trading post of Herculis Monoeci that occupied the Monaco promontory in antiquity, is Monaco's main harbour and one of the most recognisable marinas in the world. The port is natural, with a depth that allows large vessels, and was developed progressively from the late 19th century with the construction of jetties and breakwaters. Today it is the home port of some of the world's largest private yachts, superyachts of 50, 70, even 100 metres regularly use the port, and during the Monaco Yacht Show in September, it is the most concentrated display of marine luxury anywhere in the world. During the Formula 1 Grand Prix in May, the port transforms: floating grandstands are constructed over the water, the circuit runs along the harbour front, and the boats in the harbour become the most expensive race-viewing platforms in the world. The Stade Nautique Rainier III, Monaco's public swimming pool, occupies the southern end of the port and is used for swimming championships and water polo. The harbour promenade is one of Monaco's most pleasant public spaces.
Did you know? Port Hercule takes its name from the ancient settlement of Herculis Monoeci, a Ligurian and later Greek trading post on the Monaco promontory that was described by ancient authors including Strabo and is thought to date to at least the 6th century BC. 'Monaco' itself derives from 'Monoeci', the ancient name for the settlement.
