About Fontvieille: Monaco's Industrial District
Fontvieille is Monaco's westernmost district, land reclaimed from the sea in the 1960s and 1970s, home to the principality's light industrial zone, a marina, the Princess Stéphanie sports complex, and a more ordinary, workaday side of Monaco that most visitors never see.
Fontvieille is one of the most interesting aspects of Monaco that tourists rarely consider: the principality's industrial zone. The district was created by land reclamation from the sea between 1966 and 1981, adding 35 hectares to Monaco's total area (a significant addition for a country of just 2 square kilometres), specifically to provide Monaco with an area for light industrial and commercial activities. The result is a district that looks unlike anywhere else in Monaco: warehouses, small manufacturing units, print shops, a helicopter terminal, a marina for smaller pleasure craft, and service businesses. It is also home to the Musée des Timbres et des Monnaies (stamps and coins museum), the Musée de la Chapelle de la Visitation (religious art), and the complex of sports facilities known as the Espace Sports Stade Louis II adjacent to the main Stade Louis II football stadium. The Fontvieille marina, smaller and less glamorous than Port Hercule, is a good place to see working fishing boats alongside leisure craft, and the waterfront here has a completely different character from Monte Carlo.
Did you know? Fontvieille was entirely created from land reclaimed from the sea between 1966 and 1981, adding 35 hectares to Monaco's total area. This land reclamation project increased Monaco's total territory by approximately 20%, a significant expansion for the world's second-smallest country.
