About Piazza Grande

The UNESCO World Heritage ensemble at the heart of Modena, where the Romanesque Cathedral and Ghirlandina Tower face the Palazzo Comunale across the city's main civic square.

Piazza Grande is the historic centre of Modena and the setting for its UNESCO World Heritage ensemble. The square is dominated by the magnificent Romanesque Cathedral on its south side, with the adjacent Ghirlandina Tower. Facing the cathedral across the square is the Palazzo Comunale, the city's medieval town hall, with its famous Preda Ringadora (the Haranguing Stone), a simple stone block from which magistrates would address the citizens in the Middle Ages. The piazza has been the civic and commercial heart of Modena since Roman times, and its present form dates from the medieval rebuilding of the city. Today it hosts a weekly outdoor market (Wednesday and Saturday mornings), an annual traditional car auction, and the constant activity of Modenese civic life. The square was the natural setting for the UNESCO inscription of 1997, which recognised the outstanding universal value of the Cathedral-Tower-Piazza ensemble as one of the supreme achievements of Romanesque civic architecture in Europe.

Did you know? The Preda Ringadora, the Haranguing Stone in the Palazzo Comunale, is one of Italy's oldest surviving pieces of civic infrastructure: medieval magistrates stood on it to address the assembled population.
