About Luciano Pavarotti's Modena
Luciano Pavarotti, the most famous tenor in the world, was born in Modena in 1935 and maintained deep ties to his hometown throughout his life. The city celebrates his memory with the Pavarotti International Festival.
Luciano Pavarotti (1935-2007), arguably the most celebrated operatic tenor of the 20th century, was born in Modena and spent much of his life there. He studied in Modena, made his professional operatic debut in Reggio Emilia in 1961, and performed at the Teatro Regio in Parma. Modena commemorates his legacy through several institutions: the Teatro Comunale Luciano Pavarotti (the city's main opera house, renamed in his honour), the Pavarotti International Music Competition (which he founded and which continues to discover young singing talent), and a museum dedicated to his life and career at his former villa in Saliceta San Giuliano, just outside Modena. Pavarotti is considered one of the greatest voices in the history of opera. His three-tenor concerts with Plácido Domingo and José Carreras (starting with the famous 1990 Rome concert before the FIFA World Cup final) brought opera to global audiences of hundreds of millions.
Did you know? Pavarotti's famous Three Tenors concert in Rome in 1990, the night before the FIFA World Cup Final, was broadcast to an estimated 800 million television viewers worldwide, the largest audience for a classical music event in history.
