About Palazzo Ducale
Modena's magnificent Baroque ducal palace, built in the 17th century for the Este family, now serves as the Italian Military Academy, one of Italy's most prestigious military institutions.
The Palazzo Ducale is Modena's grandest architectural monument, a massive Baroque palace built beginning in 1634 by Duke Francesco I d'Este according to designs initially by Bartolomeo Avanzini. The palace replaced an older medieval fortress and was intended to be one of the most magnificent royal residences in northern Italy, a statement of the power and cultural ambitions of the Este dynasty. The palace is arranged around a vast central courtyard and features an imposing Baroque facade along the main piazza. Although the Este family left Modena in 1859 when the duchy was absorbed into the unified Italian state, the palace was not left to decay. Instead, it was acquired by the Italian military and in 1862 became the home of the Accademia Militare d'Italia (Italian Military Academy), one of the most prestigious military officer training institutions in the country. The palace is generally not open to ordinary visitors without specific permission, but the exterior facade and the main courtyard can be admired from outside. Guided tours are occasionally arranged for cultural events.
Did you know? The Palazzo Ducale housed the Este family's extraordinary library, the Biblioteca Estense, which included the Bible of Borso d'Este, one of the most magnificently illuminated manuscripts of the 15th century.
