About Modena Cathedral (Duomo)

A UNESCO World Heritage Romanesque masterpiece built from 1099, celebrated for Wiligelmo's extraordinary carved portal reliefs, the finest Romanesque sculpture in Italy.

The Modena Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Geminianus, is one of the supreme masterpieces of Romanesque architecture in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site (inscribed 1997 along with the Ghirlandina Tower and Piazza Grande). Construction began in 1099 under the architect Lanfranco and the sculptor Wiligelmo, who created the extraordinary carved portal reliefs that transformed European narrative sculpture. Wiligelmo's friezes on the main west portal depict scenes from Genesis, Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah's Ark, with a naturalism and dramatic power unprecedented in medieval art. The cathedral's interior is equally magnificent: a soaring three-nave Romanesque space with a remarkable crypt, a superb ambo (pulpit), and carved capitals of great refinement. The Porta dei Principi and Porta della Pescheria on the sides of the building contain further masterful reliefs and early representations of Arthurian legend in Italian art.

Did you know? The Porta della Pescheria on the cathedral's north side contains one of the world's earliest visual depictions of King Arthur and his knights, carved c. 1100.
