About Teatro alla Scala
The world's most prestigious opera house (1778), where Verdi, Bellini, and Puccini premiered their greatest works, its attached museum displays costumes, instruments, and portraits of operatic legends.
La Scala, opened in 1778 during the reign of Austrian Empress Maria Theresa, is widely considered the world's most important opera house, a judgement based not only on its extraordinary acoustics and physical grandeur but on its unparalleled record of world premieres. Bellini's Norma (1831), Verdi's Otello (1887) and Falstaff (1893), Puccini's Madama Butterfly (1904) and Turandot (1926) all had their world premieres here. The house seats 2,030 in a horseshoe auditorium of six tiers of boxes and a gallery, with some of the finest operatic acoustics in existence. The attached Museo Teatrale alla Scala houses an outstanding collection of operatic costumes, historical instruments, paintings, and memorabilia. The opera season runs from December to July, opening traditionally on December 7 (St Ambrose's Day, Milan's patron saint).
Did you know? La Scala's loggione (gallery gods) is one of the most demanding opera audiences in the world, even the most celebrated singers risk being booed if their performance is below standard, and a triumphant night can mean 30+ curtain calls.
