About Navigli Canal District
Milan's most atmospheric neighbourhood, a network of historic canals designed partly by Leonardo da Vinci, now lined with waterside bars and restaurants and famed for the best aperitivo scene in Italy.
The Navigli, the "navigable channels", is Milan's most bohemian and atmospheric neighbourhood, centred on two remaining navigable canals: the Naviglio Grande and the Naviglio Pavese. The canal system, begun in the twelfth century and expanded through the Renaissance, was partly designed by Leonardo da Vinci, who devised an ingenious system of locks to allow navigation through the city's flat terrain. The canals were the arteries of Milan's commercial life for centuries, carrying marble for the Duomo, goods from Lake Maggiore and the Po valley, and supporting industries along their banks. Most were filled in during the early twentieth century. The two remaining canals are now lined with vintage shops, independent restaurants, art studios, and, most famously, bars that kick off the Milanese aperitivo ritual every evening at around 6pm. The Sunday antique market on the Naviglio Grande is one of the best in Italy.
Did you know? Leonardo da Vinci designed improvements to the Navigli canal locks in the 1490s, devising the mitre gate system that allowed boats to navigate across flat terrain, the same basic principle used in canal locks worldwide today.
