About Dolmens of Antequera

A UNESCO World Heritage Site just north of Málaga, three megalithic burial monuments built between 3800 and 1800 BC that are among the largest and best-preserved dolmens in Europe, including the Menga dolmen whose chamber is 25 metres long and uses the largest known megalithic roofing slabs in the world.

The Dolmens of Antequera are a UNESCO World Heritage Site (2016) located near the town of Antequera, about 45 kilometres north of Málaga. The site includes three megalithic burial monuments: the Menga Dolmen (c.3800-3600 BC), a covered gallery dolmen with a chamber 25 metres long, the largest dolmen in Europe; the Viera Dolmen (c.3800-3600 BC), a corridor dolmen; and the El Romeral Tholos (c.1800 BC), a corbelled passage grave. All three monuments are remarkable for their size, state of preservation, and the precision of their construction. The surrounding landscape, the Torcal de Antequera and the Peña de los Enamorados, is also outstanding.

Did you know? The capstone slabs of the Menga Dolmen are among the largest monoliths ever moved by human effort in prehistoric Europe. The largest slab, which covers the main burial chamber, is estimated at 180 tonnes, heavier than any individual stone at Stonehenge. The logistics of quarrying, transporting, and placing these stones using only Neolithic technology remain a puzzle for archaeologists, who estimate that a workforce of several hundred people would have been required over many years.
