About Playa de la Malagueta

Málaga's main city beach, a 1.2-kilometre stretch of dark grey volcanic sand immediately east of the port, lined with chiringuitos (beach restaurants) serving the famous fried fish and espetos de sardinas (sardines grilled on bamboo skewers over open fires) that define the Málaga beach culture.

La Malagueta is Málaga's main city beach, a 1.2-kilometre stretch of dark volcanic sand immediately east of the historic centre and the port. The beach is backed by a promenade lined with chiringuitos, informal beach restaurants, that serve the quintessential Málaga beach food: pescaíto frito (small fried fish), boquerones en vinagre (anchovies in vinegar), and especially the espeto de sardinas, sardines skewered on bamboo sticks and grilled over charcoal fires on the beach. The espeto is a unique Málaga tradition protected as Intangible Cultural Heritage. The beach provides spectacular views of the Alcazaba and Castillo de Gibralfaro.

Did you know? The espeto de sardinas tradition in Málaga dates back at least to the 19th century, when it developed among the fishing communities of El Palo and Pedregalejo, the fishing villages that were gradually absorbed into the eastern suburbs of Málaga. The fishermen used spare bamboo sticks and beach fires to cook their daily catch, a tradition that has persisted in an essentially unchanged form despite the transformation of those villages into urban suburbs.
