About Quais de Saône

The Saône riverside quays in Vieux-Lyon, a beloved evening promenade flanked by Renaissance facades and guinguettes (riverside bars), offering some of Lyon's most atmospheric views.

The Quais de Saône, the riverside embankments along the Saône as it flows through Vieux-Lyon, are among the most atmospheric spaces in the city. On the west bank, the Renaissance facades of Vieux-Lyon rise directly from the quay, their pink and ochre plasterwork reflected in the slow-moving river. On summer evenings, the quais come alive with guinguettes, temporary riverside bars set up on barges and pontoons, serving Côtes du Rhône and aperitifs to the people of Lyon enjoying the long northern evening. The view from the Quai Saint-Vincent across to the Fourvière hill, with the basilica illuminated above the tree line and the old bridge reflected in the river, is one of the classic images of Lyon. The embankments have been progressively pedestrianised and improved in recent decades, and are now among the most pleasant places in the city for an evening walk. From here you can also see the characteristic feature of Lyon's topography: the two rivers (the Saône to the west, the Rhône to the east) creating the peninsula of the Presqu'île, flanked by two hills (Fourvière to the west, Croix-Rousse to the north).

Did you know? The Saône flows so slowly through Lyon (it has almost no gradient for the final stretch) that it is sometimes called a "dead river", but this stillness is what makes it such a perfect mirror for the Renaissance facades of Vieux-Lyon.
